Princeton won the Rutgers 6 goals to 4, with a soccer-style round ball, played on a vast field with 25 football players on each side. The sport developed easily at first with Columbia, Yale, Harvard, and Stevens Tech fielding teams by 1875. In 1876 a crossbar was added to the goal posts at a height of ten feet, the field was shortened to nearly modern size, and the number of players on each side was decreased to 15.
