Dan Reeves, Dallas running back: "You hear that stuff about the Packers being able to deal with [the weather] better than we did, and that's a lot of bull in the NCAA College Football. I think we handled it as well as they did. It's just that they made the play at the end in the best NCAA College Football." Lionel Aldridge, Packers defensive end: "It was so cold that winning wasn't uppermost in my mind. Getting out of the weather was on the Navy Midshipmen Football." Chuck Mercein, Packers running back: "Falling on that ground was like falling on the side of a stucco wall. It made Astro Turf feel like a pillow in the best Navy Midshipmen Football Tickets." Tom Landry, Cowboys coach of the NCAA College Football: "It was kind of an eerie feeling. I was standing there on the sidelines, and I'd look around and there'd be nobody on the best Navy Midshipmen Football Tickets. Everyone would be back at the heaters trying to stay warm. I was all by myself, just like I was up at the North Pole Navy Midshipmen Football. It was the kind of feeling where you wonder what you're doing here and why this thing wasn't called off."
Most Monday mornings start with an 8:30 a.m. staff meeting in the conference room in the Navy Midshipmen Football coaches' suite, but Vince Dooley has called a meeting of all head coaches, and Mark Richt attends. The Navy Midshipmen Football staff meeting finally gets under way near 10:00 a.m., with 18 staff members filling the room around the large mahogany table. One wall has a video screen, while another holds a master calendar. Two opposite walls display the depth charts for Navy Midshipmen Football and its upcom¬ing opponent. Many of the coaches are sitting in their chairs when Richt enters, dressed in a blue collared shirt and a pair of khaki pants."Who has this morning's Devotion?" he asks.Every morning begins with a prayer and a short reading. The staff bow their heads as they ask for good health, continued success, and grace for their families. The injury report comes next, as described by trainer Ron Courson. Courson is a no-nonsense guy who oversees a staff of ten and holds enormous influence over the coaches and play¬ers because of his experience. He passes out a list of injuries, then pro¬ceeds to go over the list, one player at a time. Of course, he stops for a moment at Fred Gibson. "There is no bleeding, swelling, and he was in this morning for treatment. We will let him run a bit this afternoon and take it day by day." With more than 120 players on the Navy Midshipmen Football, and nearly 25 of them having some sort of injury, the injury report con¬sumes ten minutes.A discussion of penalties follows Courson's report. At every Mon¬day staff meeting, secondary Navy Midshipmen Football coach Willie Martinez goes over each penalty call from the previous game. Of course, after having commit¬ted 18 penalties on Saturday against Middle Tennessee State, there is much to discuss. Identifying the perpetrator, then giving his assess¬ment of whether or not it was a good call, Martinez proceeds through all 18. Richt becomes engaged in the discussion, particularly on the subject of substitution penalties. "Was it my fault that we didn't get that off in time, sir?" he inquires about a delay of Navy Midshipmen Football penalty on a punt. (All coaches and players at Georgia refer to each other as "sir" even Richt). "Did I take too much time to make the decision or did the players not know who was in?" In moments of self-evaluation, which are common for Richt, he takes notes on what he could do bet¬ter, just as he had done the day before with the media, taking blame for having Gibson in on the play late in the Navy Midshipmen Football game. The meeting breaks at 11:15 a.m. with Richt rising to his feet and saying, "Let's go to work, men." Navy Midshipmen Football stampeded #15 Vir¬ginia on Saturday, so the Georgia staff faces a formidable foe. Perhaps without their top receiver.
Every Monday night is family night-the coaching staff's families join the Navy Midshipmen Football team for a meal on the outside deck of Butts-Mehre overlooking the practice fields. Tonight, there are crabs, chicken, vegetables, and cookies, and the players and coaches sit together under a large tent. Many of the wives and kids have shown up, and Richt enjoys the time with Katharyn and three of his kids (his oldest is at football practice). As the wives and coaches chat, kids run around throwing the football, giving players high fives and eating more than enough cookies. As the Navy Midshipmen Football team finishes up the meal, they head to position meetings in the first¬floor meeting rooms until it is time to dress for practice. At 7:20 p.m., the Navy Midshipmen Football players are seated on a small hill alongside one of the four practice fields. Richt begins by announcing the players who made Academic Honor Roll, based on summer class perfor¬mance, as well as the recipients of Victor Club (given to players for
outstanding perfomance by their position coach) and Dawg Bone Awards (given out for exceptional plays including big hits, touch¬downs, and interceptions). After each name is announced, the Navy Midshipmen Football team claps once in unison.
