The Greek Theater was built in 1929. The history of the impressive Greek Theatre dates as far as 1882. When Griffith J. Griffith, who arrived to America as a penniless young man from Glamorganshire, South Wales and found his luck in gold mining speculation, settled in Los Angeles (LA). Griffith bought the Los Feliz Rancho, four thousand acres of very well land northeast of the city and developed into the life of a farmer and family, growing ever fonder of his adopted town. It was throughout this era that he wrote "Sometimes I ask myself, what I have done to perpetuate the prosperity of my city?"

In 1896, During Christmas week, Griffith showed up before the Los Angeles City Council to compose a present to the city -- three thousand acres of his Los Feliz Rancho to be utilized as a park. The huge gift, equal to five square miles, was to be given to the city completely. "It must be made a place of recreation and rest for the masses, a resort for the rank and file, for the plain people," he said. "I consider it my obligation to make Los Angeles a happier, cleaner and finer city. I wish to pay my debt of duty in this way to the community in which I have prospered.

The land stayed in its natural condition for sixteen years, a public park without competitor in the world. But still, Griffith was not fully pleased that he had fully "paid [his] debt of responsibility," and, so, he reappeared in 1912, again during Christmas week, with another gift in hand -- $100,000 for the building of an observatory within the park. It was a thought whose time had not yet come, though, and the Council rejected Griffith's offer. When Griffith passed away in 1919, it was exposed that his will contained orders to set up a trust fund of 1,000,000 dollars for the creation of the observatory and also for a Greek Theatre, where residents of the city he appreciated, could come for the best entertainment not only in Los Angeles, but also in the world.
