The first use of the Greek Theater came when it was more than 18 years old. A San Francisco-based theatrical creator had the idea of carrying legitimate stage shows, such as Showboat and Anything Goes, down for two-week actions throughout the summer.
In the 1950s, Los Angeles showman James Doolittle saw latent in the breakdown theatre and set out to make his vision a reality. The 1,000 dollars Doolittle paid for the rent was only the beginning of funds he was to push back into the Greek Theater. He redesigned the Greek theatre, changing the house and behind the scenes equipment so it could compete with other 1950s theatres as well.
In 1975, the management of the Greek Theater passed over to the James M. Nederlander Companies who’s other outside theatres across the country offered the wealth of skills needed for modernizing the Greek Theater. The Nederlanders repaired, modernized and rejuvenated the Greek Theatre with their approach of providing "something for everyone." By mobilizing their countrywide network of talent purchasers and offering a wide base of attractions from modern to classical artists -- the Nederlanders have been talented enough to fulfill Griffith J. Griffith's original vision of providing Los Angeles with the best entertainment in the world. In 1983, the Nederlanders took the Los Angeles Greek Theatre one more step into the future by increasing the seating capacity to 6,187 to handle more people. A 1995 earthquake retrofit extended the capacity of the Greek theatre to its present 6,162.
The Los Angeles Greek Theatre, under the direction of the Nederlanders, has made a great force on Angelenos and has turned out to be an ongoing source of outstanding income for the City of Los Angeles. In addition to hosting famous musical performances, the Greek Theatre has served as the site of dozens of school graduations and as a backdrop for numerous TV shows and motion pictures as well.
