I n 1929 , t he engineering firm of Elliott, Bowen and Walz created the fourth shell. Allied Architects built the shell, which preserved the visual spirit of Lloyd Wright's 1928 design, but substituted a half circle for Wright's oval form. Made of transite panels coating a steel frame, the huge , 55-ton shell was designed on a trail system. The shell could be moved off the Hollywood Bowl stage area to allow for theatrical staging to be constructed for a specific performance. From the beginning, the curved shape of the shell made some serious acoustic troubles , including focused sound arbitrarily returning to the Hollywood Bowl stage. The a coustical problems instigated a continuing commitment by Hollywood Bowl directors to attain the best sound inside the Hollywood Bowl amphitheater.
Many efforts to develop the 1929 shell's acoustics were taken over the years. In 1970, architect Frank Gehry and acoustic ian Christopher Jaffe devised a cheap , temporary solution by creating "sonotubes," manufactured cardboard forms that seemed like concrete columns. Their arrangement of tubes inside the Hollywood Bowl shell and expanding the outer wings improved the sound but altered the look of the Hollywood Bowl shell, disguising the Bowl's famous curved shape. The sonotubes stayed in place until 1980.
