The Hollywood Bowl is considered to be the biggest natural amphitheater in the United States. Seating almost 18,000 patrons, the Hollywood Bowl venue has had four shells since its early stages in 1922; the new shell turned out to be the venue's fifth.
In 1922, the Hollywood Bowl's first stage was built and consisted of a simple wooden platform with a canvas top. Patrons sat on portable benches. In 1926, a supportive society of 33 local Los Angeles architects, known as Allied Architects, constructed the Bowl's first arched proscenium. The curved wooden frame contained of two distinct shapes: a low elliptical arch in the background with a rounded arch inside, framing the musicians. The acoustic troubles found in the design caused the Hollywood Bowl shell to be tattered down at the end of the season. The famous Pasadena architect Myron Hunt formed a blueprint for the Hollywood Bowl amphitheater based on concepts from his previous design for the Rose Bowl athletic stadium. Hunt's balloon-shaped seating region rose up from the Hollywood Bowl stage, outlined by elegant curving stairways all around. The construction of the Hollywood Bowl was finished in 1926.
Lloyd Wright, the oldest son of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed two Hollywood Bowl shells. He was told to design a shell for the 1927 symphony season after having planned numerous sets for theatrical productions at the Hollywood Bowl. The first Lloyd Wright design was planned only as a temporary structure and was used for one season only.
