The 1,259-seat ZUMANITY Theatre is a affectionate, friendly, purely welcoming space that was created out of an existing theatre. Designer Stéphane Roy left the backstage area and front of house in the same basic locations as before, but to meet the unique demands of ZUMANITY the rest of the space was almost entirely demolished even the roof was detached. Only the outside walls were left standing. The seating design and main stage were radically altered from a conventional raked auditorium facing a proscenium arch into a graceful configuration that has the audience surrounding a wavy thrust stage. To highlight the overall sensuality of the inside from the walls to the carpets to the seats Roy chose warm, appealing colors, luxurious velour materials and soft, acquiescent contours.
Roy says the whole surroundings were inspired by the natural shapes and colors of the human body; particularly, the warmth and safety of the womb and the graceful lines of the fallopian tubes. The resulting curves and lines carry that theme from the theatre’s Art Nouveau-inspired foyer right through to the sensual, feminine outline of the stage itself. The set design of ZUMANITY is fully incorporated into the theatre, creating an integrated space that invites the spectators to relax and compels the artists to perform.
The stage conceals multifaceted lifts and mechanisms to keep the set of ZUMANITY in a state of constant change, but according to Roy, the single hardest design challenge was “The Waves,” two large set elements that move separately of each other. They were not intended to be merely decorative, but to work in performance with lighting effects and projections to create changeable moods, from sensuality to frenzied excitement and offer glimpses of intimacy and vistas of grandeur, depending on the demands of the moment.
