anaheim angels stadium

Originally known as Anaheim Stadium, naming rights caused the ballpark's change of name. Though also victim to football dictated expansion in 1989 (increasing seating capacity fro to 64,593), happily the stadium was reconfigured back to a baseball-only facil¬ity in 1998, with capacity scaled back to a reasonable 45,050. It is now among the more enjoyable ballparks in baseball.

Edison Field is located along what surely must be the busiest family entertainment street in the country, Katella Avenue. Located here are Disney land and Knott's Berry Farm as well as dozens of motels and restaurants.  Despite the congestion, the city has managed to maintain a family atmosphere. The ballpark, too, is a clean, friendly attraction.

The previous owner, Gene Autry, was beloved by players and far memory remains strong here. The Angels never won a pennant during Autry's tenure, but he inspired a loyalty rarely found between baseball players and management. Though he passed away in 1998, his spirit is not forgotten. Among the giant murals of famous Angels pictured along the outfield fence is the smiling cowboy's face.

Before the stadium was enclosed, it featured what was then the la standing scoreboard in the country, topped by the Angels logo, a huge A encircled by a halo. When the ballpark was enclosed, the A was replaced by a smaller A visible beyond left center field. During the earthquake of 1994, this smaller A crashed into the upper deck, causing considerable damage. Unfortunately, even though the stadium was reconfigured, the big A was not returned its place. But the rocks and waterfalls beyond the center-field fence add vise and set this place apart from the other California ballparks.

ADAM KENNEDY "I don't know if I'd rather have any other stadium to go to every day than Edison. If you didn't have a smile on your face, you'd have a smile come BP time, 'cause everything about it is so great."

TREVOR HOFFMAN "First memory of going into a ball field would be Anaheim Stadium back in the eighties. My dad was an usher there, and I'd go in to work with them, and he'd take us in early to go through the ushers' section and then up to his sec¬tion. It was pretty neat 'cause we'd park outside of the left-field wall, actually beyond the stadium, and you'd walk through and walk underneath the big A when it was out in left field over there before they enclosed it."

JARET WRIGHT "When I was growing up, my father played. So my first time, I was actually inside Anaheim Stadium. It was a great experience. I was real young; I was a baby. Since then I've seen my share of them, and every single one of them has something special."

BEN GRIEVE "I like those rocks out there. This is probably the nicest one we've been in all year. Playing surface is real nice; it's got a good atmosphere with the fountains out there and everything. Good weather. I like this place a lot."
