Game 3 at Shea Stadium shaped up as a duel between two top-notch pitchers, Tom Seaver and Catfish Hunter. The A's put the seventh game away in the third inning, scoring four runs capped by a long Jackson homer. It was the first career World Series home run for the future Mr. October, and it sent the A's on their way to a 5-2 victory and a world championship. However, it had been one of the more poorl played Series in memory, in part because of the freezing night games played in New York. The teams combined for a shocking nineteen errors, and the Mets stranded a record 72 runners on base. Oakland had its bullpen to thank for the victory; A's relievers pitched 31 innings in the Series and allowed only three earned runs.
But even the finer moments on the field had been obscured by Finley's egotistical grandstanding, which continued even after the Series was over, when he ordered a set of cheap, diamond-less World Series rings for his victorious players. "I wanted to slide and run and hit and get dirty, but the little boy in me was taken out by all the nonsense," Jackson said.
