History of New York Mets

Game 3 at Shea Stadium shaped up as a duel between two top-notch pitchers, Tom Seaver and Catfish Hunter. Seaver struck out five consecutive batters in the early innings, but Hunter and three Oakland relievers held the New York Mets Baseball score-less for the last ten innings of the game. The A's won it, 3-2, behind shortstop Bert Campaneris, who scored the tying run in the eighth and drove in the winning run in the eleventh. The fourth game ended up a New York Mets (Schedule available) blowout, 6-1, thanks to four hits and five RBI by Daniel "Rusty" Staub, though Shea Stadium's loudest applause of the night was reserved for the reinstated Andrews, who came up as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and grounded out.

Jerry Koosman and Tug McGraw com¬bined on a three-hit shutout in Game 5 to propel the Mets into the Series lead. Now the Athletics were not only facing elimina¬tion, but they were also facing Seaver, the best pitcher in baseball, in Game 6. Seaver threw well, but he was outpitched by Hunter, who combined with two relievers on a M. victory. The biggest factor in the win was RPVVie Jackson who had been rnnsnininnsly base in the first five games. Jackson's three hits were responsible for all three Oakland runs on this night, however, forcing players to prepare for a seventh game showdown.

The A's put the seventh game away in the third inning, scoring four runs capped by a long Jackson homer. It was the first career World Series home run for the future Mr. October, and it sent the A's on their way to a 5-2 victory and a world championship. However, it had been one of the more poorl played Series in memory, in part because of the freezing night games played in New York. The teams combined for a shocking nineteen errors, and the Mets stranded a record 72 runners on base. Oakland had its bullpen to thank for the victory; A's relievers pitched 31 innings in the Series and allowed only three earned runs.
But even the finer moments on the field had been obscured by Finley's egotistical grandstanding, which continued even after the Series was over, when he ordered a set of cheap, diamond-less World Series rings for his victorious players. "I wanted to slide and run and hit and get dirty, but the little boy in me was taken out by all the nonsense," Jackson said. "Nobody seemed to care anything about the players, just all that other stuff."
