The MLB All Star Game in Major League Baseball is a game among teams of excellent players chosen from National and American league teams who go up against each other as league against league. Arch Ward, a Chicago Tribune sports editor, is credited with promoting the first All-Star Game, which was held in Chicago in 1933 in conjunction with the Century of Progress Exposition. The All-Star Game is held each July; two annual games were played from 1959 to 1962. Most of the door receipts are donated to the player's annuity fund. As of July 2004, for the 2003-2004 seasons, the MLB team that won the All Star game was to be given home-field advantage for the World Series. Previously, home-field advantage in the World Series switched between the two leagues each year.The Home Run Derby, a contest between home run hitters, is played on the day prior to the All Star Game.The 2005All-Star Game Venue is Comerica Park, a baseball stadium to be found in downtown Detroit, Michigan. It was constructed as a replacement for the aging Tiger Stadium for the Detroit Tigers. It is located next door to Ford Field, the new home of the Detroit Lions. Groundbreaking for the ballpark was held on October 29, 1997 and the new stadium was opened to the public in 2000. The new stadium is part of a downtown revitalization plan for the city of Detroit. In December 1998, the bank Comerica agreed to pay $66 million over 30 years for the naming rights for the new ballpark.
