New York Yankees

THE 1921 WORLD SERIES BETWEEN TILE Giants and Yankees is best remembered for being the first of the fourteen New York "Subway Series." (Of these, the Brooklyn Dodgers appeared in seven, the Giants six, the Mets one, and the Yankees all fourteen.) After the 1919 debacle, the best-of-nine 1921 Series was the second spectacularly exciting Series in a row, further putting baseball hack into the good graces of the fans. It was also the first Series to be played entirely in the same stadium, since both the Yankees and Giants called the Polo Grounds home.

The Yankees thoroughly dominated the American League in 1921, winning the first pennant in team history thanks to an historic season of New York Yankees Tickets from Babe Ruth, who broke his own record with 59 home runs and produced a .512 on-base percentage and an .846 slugging percentage. Not only did the Yankees lead the American League in runs scored, but their pitchers also led in earned run average, thanks to the right arms of Carl Mays, Waite Hoyt, and Bob Shawkev. The Yankees put together their squad like a hungry vulture, plucking star players from the two decimated A.L. dynasties of the 1910s, Philadelphia (where they got Shawkev and Home Run Baker) and Boston (where they got Mays, Hoyt, catcher Wally Schang, and Ruth). The Giants were much the same. Only one significant player, George Burns, remained from John McGraw's pennant-winning squad of four years earlier. McGraw prided himself on his ability to rejuvenate Yankees Tickets and players deemed expendable by other teams, and he filled his 1921 squad with talented castoffs including catcher Frank Snyder, shortstop Dave Bancroft, left fielder Emil "Irish" Meusel, and the entire pitching staff of Art Nehf, Fred Toney, Jesse Barnes, and Phil Douglas. These players, combined with three homegrown young stars-Frankie Frisch, Ross Youngs, and George Kelly-gave the Giants the nucleus of a team that would win four consecutive National League pennants.

The Yankees jumped out to a quick lead in the Series, winning each of the first two games by the score of 3-0. In Game 1, Mays, according to Baseball Magazine, "had the Giants' bats waving like palm fronds in a hurricane." The offensive star was utility infielder Mike McNally, who had a single, a double, and a daring steal of home. The Yanks won the second game behind the shut-out pitching of Hoyt, and for the second consecutive day they had a steal of home, this one by Emil's younger brother Bob Meusel.
Things looked bleak for the Giants mid-way through Game 3. Not only had no team ever come back from a 2-0 deficit in the World Series, but Giants starter Toney was battered around in Game 3, leaving after two miserable innings. But Barnes came in to pitch seven innings of magnificent relief, and also contributed hits to two key rallies. we provide New York Yankees Tickets. The Giants charged back into the lead with eight runs in the seventh inning, winning the game 13-5. The fourth game again started well for the Yankees as Mays held the Giants hitless into the sixth inning. But the Giants took the lead when Irish Meusel's triple started a seventh inning rally. Ruth homered in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Giants won 4-2. With the Series now tied, Hoyt pitched well in Game 5 and the Yankees won 3-1, scoring the winning run when Ruth started a rally with, of all things, a bunt single.

The Yankees suffered a huge blow before Game 6 when Ruth was forced to sit out the rest of the Series with a bad knee and an abscess on his left elbow. The Babe Ruth of 1921 was the single greatest offensive force in baseball history and his absence meant the Yankees, though leading the Series, were in deep trouble to sell Yankees Tickets. McGraw brought back Toney, who had been bombed in Game 3, to start Game 6. Toney pitched even worse this time, as he was unable to even get out of the first inning. But once again, Barnes came to his rescue, pitching 8:X innings of solid relief as the Giants came back to win 8-5. The Giants won again the next day behind spitballer Douglas. who outpitched Mays in a 2-1 squeaker. Now the Giants held the upper hand, leading the Series 4-3 entering the Game 8 matchup between Nehf and Hoyt. Both pitched magnificently, as the only run of the game scored in the first inning when the Yankees Roger Peckinpaugh let a grounder go through his legs. The New York Yankees Tickets, batting in the bottom of the ninth down by a run, put a man on first with one out. On a hit and run play, Frank Baker smashed a line drive that appeared headed toward right field. but second baseman Johnny Rawlings dove for the ball, knocked it down, and threw from the ground to get Baker out at first. Baserunner Aaron Ward tried to go to third on the play, and first baseman hell threw him out to complete a spectacular World Series-ending double play. Though they had played well in a hard-fought Series. Losing Yankees Tickets couldn't help but wonder what might have happened if they'd had Babe Ruth for the last three games.
