The two had dominated the race and were running 1-2 on the last lap, with Petty in the lead. Pearson shot past Petty going into Turn 3, only to have Petty get back beside him coming through Turn 4 for the Daytona 500 Tickets. As Petty slipped ahead, the two cars banged together, sending both crashing hard into the wall and coming to rest a few hundred yards short of victory for the Daytona 500 Auto Car Racing. Petty's engine stalled, but Pearson kept his engine running and crept across the finish line at about 20 mph. It was the only Daytona 500 win for Pearson, one of the sport's all-time greats.
