Fourteen rookies and 13 drivers had never raced at Daytona's fast oval before the NASCAR Goody 500 Dash Series race. Christian Elder avoided a pair of multiple-car crashes to win the Discount Auto Parts 200 on Friday. The race included three red flags, seven caution periods, 57 minutes in delays and one spectacular wreck that flipped a car eight times. Elder, a part-time driver on the Goody 500 Tickets available, series from Minneapolis, beat Robert Huffman for a 3.254-second victory after a restart with three laps remaining. Elder earned $11,550 for taking the checkered flag, although all 21 drivers who finished with their cars running must have felt like winners. "There were a pretty good number of rookies in the field and a pretty good number of rookie crew chiefs," Elder said. "When you combine those two, you're asking for trouble and we had trouble today." Three drivers were hospitalized, two with broken legs and the other with a minor neck injury. TheGoody 500 race tickets are available, normally completed in about 90 minutes, took almost three hours.
Just 22 laps into the 80-lap Goody 500 race and Goody 500 Tickets are available, accidents had knocked out 20 of the 42 cars. "Last year, I watched some tapes and thought I realized what it took to survive this race," said Derrick Kelley, who was involved in one of the big wrecks. "I think some of those guys need to watch some of those tapes, watch those wrecks and realize how these cars bump together." The most dramatic accident, however, was a one-car affair. Heading toward the start-finish line with just four laps left, Danny Bagwell lost control. His Ford barrel-rolled eight times before coming to a stop in the apron, with every piece of sheet metal sheared off the body by the time it stopped. He crawled out of the shell and waited for a stretcher to arrive as the 40,000 fans cheered. He was not seriously injured. The race, involving younger drivers in four- and six-cylinder subcompacts, is normally plagued by accidents, yet this one still stood out. But Elder didn't feel there were any fundamental problems with the drivers or cars. "For three years here, I've seen rollover accidents; I've seen people try to knock down the fences," he said. "But I've seen everyone get out and walk away. I think the cars are OK."
The Goody 500, held at Daytona International Speedway each February, is the most popular stock-car race in the world. It's NASCAR's Super Bowl and is the Goody 500 race every driver dreams of winning, and the Goody 500 Tickets Tickets are available. Some of the most legendary and talked about drivers in the world have won the event, including Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, and even Indy 500 winners Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt. The winner goes on a media tour the week after making it to the Victory Lane, appearing on national TV shows like Late Night with David Letterman or The Tonight Show. Yea winning the Goody 500 is quite an accomplishment because about 200,000 fans watch it in person at the tracks and millions of people watch it on TV, but there's something even more special about winning the Goody 500-mile race. The driver who wins it feels pretty good about his upcoming season - the Goody 500 kicks off the NASCAR Winston Cup Series season every year, and doing well in the race boosts a driver's confidence heading into the rest of the season.
Daytona International Speedway is the most popular track in NASCAR racing, alot because Daytona Beach is where NASCAR began. Even before NASCAR was created, racers would flock to Daytona's hard-packed sand beaches to go toe-to-toe against each other while trying to dodge the incoming tide. Now, those racers and millions of fans each year gather to the 2.5-mile superspeedway a few miles inland from where NASCAR stock-car racing began. The high-ranked, high-speed track has two official NASCAR Winston Cup Series races each year - the Goody 500 and the Pepsi 400, used to be known as the Firecracker 400. The track also hosts the Bud Shootout, which is a no point race about a week before the Goody 500 made up of pole winners from the previous year and one wildcard entry. Race fans usually don't show up in Daytona Beach the day before the Goody 500 - there's way too much to see before the big event! The track has more than two weeks of racing each February, a time of the year known as Speedweeks:
The annual series of events starts out with the Rolex 24 at Daytona, a sports-car endurance race. The stock-car portion kicks off with pole qualifying and the Bud Shootout. The track also features lower-tier stock-car races, such as an Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) race and a NASCAR Goody's Dash Series race. The track hosts an International Race of Champions (IROC) race, where 12 of the best drivers in the world compete against each other in equally prepared stock cars. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the NASCAR Busch Series have their season-opening events.
