In the summer of 1982, a 16 page booklet entitled NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports arrived in the mail boxes of the membership of what was then called the Southeast Vintage Racing Association. Published by SVRA president and founder Ford Heacock of Lakeland, FL, the quarterly booklet was an outgrowth of the organization's newsletter, which had existed since the SVRA was founded in 1980. Fueled by raw enthusiasm and a heartfelt desire to do something to help further the burgeoning sport of vintage and historic automobile racing, that little booklet has developed and grown into a high quality, four-color, internationally read and well-respected publication. The magazine's growth reflects the increased worldwide interest in vintage and historic racing, which was one of the fastest-growing facets of NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports Tickets in the last decade. In the beginning, NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports was, as Heacock describes it, very much "a kitchen-table operation, literally." Type was set by a local print shop, and galleys were pasted up on a drafting table in Heacock's kitchen. The first major milestone occurred in 1984, when the decision was made to move to a full-size magazine format. In 1986, frustrated by the awkwardness of having to drive across town numerous times to get type set and corrections made before production could be completed, Heacock purchased an Apple computer and NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports Speedway camped on the cutting edge of what would become known as "the desktop publishing revolution," as it was described in the June 30, 1986 issue of Time, which featured NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports Speedway among a handful of other similarly produced publications.
Another major milestone came in 1987, when Heacock sold his interest in the SVRA, hired a business consultant and established a business plan to help NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports Speedway grow further. The following year, well-known artist and photographer, Art Eastman, was hired as the magazine's editor, and the production schedule increased from quarterly to bi-monthly. In 1990, the largest step in the magazine's growth was taken when Syd Silverman, former publisher/editor of Variety and Variety Daily, purchased a majority share in the operation. With his guidance, influence and knowledge of the publishing business, NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports is into its third decade as a viable contender among the world's foremost automotive publications. Today, NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports Tickets is a much different entity from the booklets produced in 1982. The focus of the magazine has shifted from that of a club periodical to the Journal of Motor Racing History, featuring in-depth articles on the significant people, machines and events of racing's past as well as coverage of the contemporary vintage and historic racing scene in America and abroad. Additionally, our regular columns and features on automotive art and miniatures, as well as book and video reviews, are very popular. Where typeset galleys were once pasted down in Ford Heacock's kitchen, computer-generated type and state-of-the-art techniques and equipment are now producing the current NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports Tickets. We are grateful for access to the photographic files of Road & Track, the Klementaski Collection and various other friends and enthusiasts to help us bring racing history to life in our pages.
We have embarked on ambitious projects such as a multi-part series co-edited by Pete Lyons and Dean Batchelor on the history of road racing specials in North America from the 1930s to the mid-1960s, as well as by Pete Lyons' two-part history on Jim Hall and his Chaparrals and a six-issue series on Can-Am (1966-'74); Rich Taylor's eight-issue series on Trans-Am (1966-'74) and two-part series on Formula 5000: and John M. Burns' three-part series on the Carrera Panamericana (1950-'54), popularly known as the Mexican Road Race. In 1992, we began producing the NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports Annual, a photographic annual review of contemporary vintage racing, rallies and concours containing photography that has not been previously published in the magazine. Today NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports is produced under the direction of Editor-in-Chief, D. Randy Riggs, who works from the NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports Speedway editorial office north of San Francisco. An active vintage racer himself, Randy participates in events from coast-to-coast in a variety of historic cars that have included a Chrysler-Allard J2X, E-Type Jaguar, Lister-Jaguar, FIA Cobra, Porsche 935K3, Porsche 2.0-liter 911 and the famous Buick-powered Murphy-Kurtis SX.
Advertising, circulation and administration offices are located in Lakeland, Fla. As Ford Heacock first said in 1982, "We want each issue to be better than the previous one." That is a credo that NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports has lived by since its inception, and one that we intend to live by in the future. We hope that you appreciate the progress we've made thus far, and invite you to take a good look at our Web site for additional information and regular updates on NASCAR USHR Superbowl of Motorsports and the vintage-racing scene.
