May 11, 1980, The Spectrum, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Former Philadelphia 76ers team mate Steve Mix calls it "The Move." It was the most breathtaking play in the career of Julius Erving, whose career was filled with breathtaking plays from which to choose. Philadelphia 76ers Team trailed Los Angeles 2-1 in the NBA Finals and needed a win at home to pull even. The game was close in the fourth quarter when Erving beat defender Mark Landsberger to the baseline and took off toward the hoop.
What happened next made a lasting impression on everyone who saw it. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Lakers' 7-foot tower, stepped into Dr. J's path intent on blocking the shot-or at least stopping it with a foul. Instead, Erving shifted his body in mid-air, soaring behind the backboard, and floated just long enough to stretch his right arm back toward the hoop to score on a once-in-a¬lifetime reverse layup. "My mouth just dropped open," the Lakers' Magic Johnson recalled. The 76ers won the game, 105-102, but lost the series in six. Find more Philadelphia 76ers Info from our website.
