This team's decorated history did not begin in Philadelphia or with the name "76ers."
It started in the college town of Syracuse in the National Basketball League in 1937. Then called the Nationals, the team played with some distinction before joining the NBA in 1949-50 and falling to Minneapolis in the Finals. One could say it was a sign of things to come, as the franchise would become accustomed to achieving regular-season success before falling tantalizingly short of the ultimate goal. That was not always the case. The Nats bested Fort Wayne in a thrilling 1955 Finals. Following in the footsteps of Hall of Fame career of Dolph Schayes, a better big man-Wilt Chamberlain-made a huge impact after the Philadelphia 76ers Tickets made a 1963 move to Philadelphia and became the Philadelphia 76ers Tickets. The next year, the Philadelphia 76ers traded for Chamberlain, a move that ultimately produced another championship in 1967. Before their next title, though, Philadelphia 76ers Tickets fans endured a 9-73 mark in 1972-73-a record for futility. The purchase of Julius Erving from the ABA-in 1976, of all years-signaled a desire to build a winner, and it paid off with another championship after center Moses Malone joined him in 1982-83. Philadelphia 76ers tickets latest close call came in 2001 Finals, where Allen Iverson led the team to a Game 1 win before the Lakers took the title with four straight victories. Since then, the champagne in Philadelphia 76ers has been kept on ice.
1937 The Syracuse Nationals begin play in the National Basketball League.
1949-50 The Dolph Schayes-led Nats race into the NBA, compiling a 51-13 mark. They win 31 of 32 home games but fall to Minneapolis in the Finals.
1954-55 Syracuse wins its only championship, thanks to a 92-91 Game 7 win over Fort Wayne.
1963-64 After the Warriors' move to San Francisco, left Philadelphia 76ers Tickets without pro basketball the previous season, the Nationals bring it back, leaving Syracuse to become the Philadelphia 76ers.
1964-65 Midways through the season, the Philadelphia 76ers Tickets trade three players and cash to the Warriors for Wilt Chamberlain.
1966-67 Philly wins 45 of its first 49 games en route to a 68-13 record and NBA title. Chet Walker and Billy Cunningham are perfect complements to Chamberlain on one of the all-time great teams.
1972-73 Just four years removed from a 62-20 mark, the Philadelphia 76ers stumble to 73 losses-ineptitude that has not been matched.
1976-77 The rebuilding process begins in earnest when the Philadelphia 76ers pays $6 million to acquire Julius Erving from the ABA. Erving and George McGinnis combine for 40-plus PPG.
1982-83 After continually falling short, the Philadelphia 76ers break through with a title. The addition of Moses Malone makes Philly the most complete team in the NBA.
1986-87 After the season, Erving retires with 30,026 ABA/NBA points. Charles Barkley becomes the team's dominant player.
1996-97 Allen Iverson arrives and the Philadelphia 76ers begins making progress after several lean years. It takes him just three years to win a scoring title.
2000-01 Iverson leads the Philadelphia 76ers to the Finals for the first time since 1983. They fall to the Lakers in five games.
