news and facts about the Milwaukee Bucks

"He's our piranha. He'll eat you alive. He would score in a raging storm at sea. "-Former Utah coach Frank Layden on Adrian Dantley.

Adrian Dantley, a player of Milwaukee Bucks was among the most prolific scorers of his generation, and his career .540 shooting percentage is among the best in NBA history by a non-center. If you needed a bucket, Adrian Dantley was your man. And while basketball has seen its share of scoring machines, what set Adrian Dantley apart was his ability to thrive from virtually anywhere on the floor. Adrian Dantley's perimeter marksmanship was exceptional. Adrian Dantley quick first step allowed him to get to the basket against almost any defender. His strength and determination made him a force around the hoop despite his height. "I can't figure out how a guy 6 foot 5 inches can score inside like that," Wilt Chamberlain once said. "Elgin Baylor didn't do that. Elgin had great hands. He'd score off the break, or drive. But he'd never do like Adrian Dantley-stay inside and grab balls, go up two or three times and score. That's incredible, especially with all those leapers around."

That combination of skills, instincts and determination was honed on the courts of Washington D.C. and at DeMatha High School in Maryland, where Adrian Dantley earned All-America status while leading the team to a 57-2 record. He was a two-time NCAA All-American in three years at Notre Dame, won a gold medal in the 1976 Olympics and earned 1977 NBA Rookie of the Year honors with the Buffalo Braves. Three trades in the next two years eventually saw Adrian Dantley don a Jazz uniform. In it, Adrian Dantley became the league's most dangerous scorer. He averaged 30-plus points per game in four straight seasons, winning a pair of scoring titles. He routinely made more trips to the free-throw line than anyone, leading the league five times in free throws made. A 1986 trade to Detroit helped Adrian Dantley, a six-time All-Star, reach the NBA Finals for the only time in his career in 1988, but the Lakers kept him from winning a championship. Adrian Dantley retired in 1991 as the NBA's ninth-leading career scorer.
