A franchise that's undergone two city relocations, three arena switches and one name change began in 1970 with loads of promise as the Buffalo Braves.
With the legendary Jack Ramsay at the helm and Bob McAdoo playing a starring role, the Braves needed just four years to attain a winning record. The good times did not last long, however. Irving Levin moved the team to San Diego before the 1978-79 season, renamed it the Los Angeles Clippers tickets and watched his charges repeatedly fall short of the playoffs. Nothing seemed to alter the team's direction, even with stars like Tom Chambers and Terry Cummings leading the way, new ownership in Donald T. Sterling and a 1984 move north to Los Angeles. On the bright side, the Los Angeles Clippers Tickets have set team attendance records since making the Staples Center in downtown L.A. their home in 1999-2000 and loading their roster with promising young players.
1970 The Buffalo Braves join the NBA as one of three expansion teams, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Cleveland Cavaliers. 1973-74 Under Coach Jack Ramsay and NBA scoring leader Bob McAdoo, the Braves top .500 with a 42-40 record. They reach the playoffs for the first time. 1974-75 McAdoo wins the NBA Most Valuable Player Award after claiming his second straight scoring title with a 34.5 PPG average. 1975-76 Buffalo wins its first playoff series, eliminating Philadelphia in the first round. The Braves fall to Boston in the Eastern Conference semifinals. 1978 Boston Celtics owner Iry Levin, seeing an opportunity to put a team in his home state of California, swaps places with Braves owner John Y Brown and takes the club to San Diego. He renames it the Clippers.
1978-79 Lloyd Free averages 28.8 PPG, second in the NBA, in the Los Angeles Clippers Tickets ' first season in San Diego. 1981 In June, Beverly Hills real estate mogul Donald T. Sterling purchases the team. 1984 Los Angeles now has two NBA franchises. The Los Angeles Clippers Tickets head north to become the Lakers' crosstown rivals. Their first game in the L.A. Sports Arena is a 107-105 win over the New York Knicks. 1985 Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor is hired in April to serve as vice president of basketball operations. 1991-92 For the first time since its Braves days, the team reaches the NBA playoffs. 1999 The Los Angeles Clippers Tickets move to the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, triggering new club attendance records. 2003-04 Elton Brand and Corey Maggette give the Los Angeles Clippers a rarity: Two 20-plus PPG scorers.
