For better or for worse, this has been a team on the go. Few have packed and unpacked as frequently as the Atlanta Hawks, who debuted as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks in 1946 in Moline and Rock Island, Ill., and Davenport, Iowa, and later played in Milwaukee and St. Louis before finding a home in Dixie. Some of the top players in the game were Atlanta Hawk Basketball in those early years. Bob Pettit, Cliff Hagan and Ed Macauley starred on the 1957-58 teams that won the franchise's only championship, with Charlie Share helping hold off the Celtics in the Finals despite a broken jaw. The Atlanta Hawks Tickets move to Atlanta in 1968-69 did not bring the peach state the same winning product, but fans' patience paid off when Dominique Wilkins' arrival in 1982 gave them a "Human Highlight Film" and a path to better success. The Atlanta Hawks tickets won a division title under Coach Mike Fratello in 1986-87 and set a club record with 57 victories under Lenny Wilkens in 1993-94, but its emergence coincided with a dynasty in Chicago, preventing Atlanta Hawks Tickets from competing for another championship.
1946-47 The Tri-Cities Blackhawks join the National Basketball League.
1949-50 In the first NBA campaign, the Blackhawks fire Coach Roger Potter and replace him with Red Auerbach. Auerbach bolts for Boston after the season.
1951-52 Before the season starts, the team relocates to Milwaukee as the Atlanta Hawks Tickets.
1955-56 With MVP Bob Pettit leading the NBA in scoring and rebounding, the Atlanta Hawks move to St. Louis and make the Western Division finals.
1957-58 In an NBA Finals rematch, St. Louis has the talent and depth to oust Boston for the title (see Atlanta Hawk Schedule). Pettit sets a playoff record with 50 points in the decisive Game 6.
1965 Pettit retires with two MVP Awards and four All-Star MVP honors. Lou Hudson is drafted the following year and becomes the team's star.
1968-69 The Atlanta Hawks Tickets fly south to Atlanta under new ownership.
1972 A new home, the Omni, and new coach, Cotton Fitzsimmons, signal change for the Pete Maravich-led Atlanta Hawks. Richie Guerin steps down with 327 wins.
1982-83 A trade for rookie Dominique Wilkins sets the tone for the next decade. Dominique's acrobatic jams become the team's signature.
1986-87 Atlanta Hawks wins 57 games with Wilkins and Glenn "Doc" Rivers leading the way.
1993-94 Coach Lenny Wilkens comes aboard and guides the team to its first division title since 1987. The next year, Wilkens becomes the NBA's winningest head coach.
1996-97 The addition of 7-2 center Dikembe Mutombo helps the Atlanta Hawks become one of the NBA's top defensive clubs.
1999-00 The Atlanta Hawks move into Philips Arena and begin rebuilding.
2003-04 Stan Kasten, the only man to preside over three major-league sports franchises concurrently, steps down as head of the Atlanta Hawks, Braves (MLB) and Thrashers (NHL).
