Miami Heat was the most futile start in NBA history. The Miami Heat, who entered the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets in 1988-89 as the first two teams in a four-club expansion, lost their first 17 games-a league record for failure at the beginning of a season. It did not take long, however, for some shrewd drafting and wise player moves to pay dividends. Behind Glen Rice, Rony Seikaly, rookie Steve Smith and Coach Kevin Loughery in 1991-92, the Miami Heat Tickets became the first of the four expansion clubs to reach the playoffs. 1988 After a record 17 straight losses to start the season, Miami Heat edges the Clippers 89-88 for its first franchise win. 1989-90 Rony Seikaly wins the NBA's Most Improved Player Award. 1991-92 With Kevin Loughery taking the coaching helm from Ron Rothstein, Miami Heat Tickets makes the playoffs for the first time. 1992-93 Brian Shaw sets an NBA record by making 10 treys in a game against Milwaukee. 1994-95 Glen Rice sets a franchise record by scoring 56 points in a nationally-televised game against state rival Orlando. 1995-96 Former Lakers and Knicks coach Pat Riley takes over the Heat. On the eve of the season, he pulls off a trade with Charlotte that lands Alonzo Mourning.

1996-97 Miami Heat Tickets is the NBA's most improved team with a 61-21 mark, winning the Atlantic Division title. Along the way, the Miami Heat wins 14 consecutive road games. Miami Heat Tickets falls to the Bulls in the playoffs for the second straight year. 1998-99 Mourning wins the first of his two consecutive NBA Defensive Player of the Year Awards and finishes second in the MVP balloting. 1999-00 American Airlines Arena becomes the Miami Heat's new waterfront home, but some things remain constant. Miami Heat and New York meet in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. 2003-04 Rookie Dwayne Wade's presence helps the Miami Heat return to the postseason; Miami Heat reaches the second round.
