May 8, 1970, Madison Square Garden, New York, New York
Few who witnessed the series will ever forget the 1970 NBA Finals between the Lakers and Knicks. Game 3 saw the Lakers' Jerry West sink a 60-foot, game-tying prayer at the buzzer-one of the most memorable shots in NBA history-though New York went on to win the game in overtime.
The game Knicks fans remember most was the clincher. Star center Willis Reed had torn a muscle in his thigh in Game 5, an injury that forced him to watch Game 6 from the sideline as the Lakers evened the series.
No one was sure whether Reed would play in Game 7. He did not participate in warm-ups, but after a pain-killing injection in the locker room, he limped to the Madison Square Garden court, took the opening tip against Wilt Chamberlain and scored his team's first two baskets. Those were his only points of the game, but they sparked the Knicks to a 113-99 victory and their first championship.
