Only two charter members of the NBA remain in the cities they started in-the Boston Celtics and New York Knickerbockers. 1977-78 Holzman, who was replaced by Reed the year before, is brought back as coach as the New York Knicks begin to falter. 1984-85 Bernard King becomes the first Knick to lead the NBA in scoring, averaging 32.9 PPG. 1985 The New York Knicks win the first draft lottery and use the top pick on center Patrick Ewing. 1991-92 Pat Riley, winner of four rings with the Lakers, takes over as head coach. 1993-94 One year after winning 60 games, the New York Knicks return to the Finals, falling to Houston in seven games. 1998-99 New York becomes the first No. 8 playoff seed to reach the Finals, but San Antonio claims the championship. 2003-04 New executive Isiah Thomas puts his stamp on the team, making changes that help the New York Knicks reach the playoffs for the first time since 2001.
