ONE GOOD BUZZER-BEATER DESERVES ANOTHER
Los Angeles Lakers 74
San Antonio Spurs 73
May 13, 2004, SBC Center, San Antonio, Texas
With just the first of its two last-second buckets, this game would have been remembered as perhaps the most exciting of the 2004 NBA playoffs. The Basketball info on the LA Lakers' Derek Fisher ensured it would be hailed as one of the all-time fantastic finishes. In the pivotal game of a Western Conference semifinal series tied at two games apiece, San Antonio center Tim Duncan hit a 20-foot fadeaway over Shaquille O'Neal with 0.4 seconds remaining, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and the Spurs, it seemed, to a certain 73-72 victory. "I couldn't believe it went in," Duncan said. But if that shot seemed unbelievable, Fisher's was like a bolt from the sky. The inbound pass went to the only open Laker and the team's only non-superstar on the floor at the time-Fisher. The unheralded guard went into his shooting motion as soon as his fingers touched the ball, turning and launching the winning shot over Manu Ginobili, then running straight for the locker room as if it would help those checking the clock decide he got the shot off in time. He did. The Lakers won the series two nights later, then defeated Minnesota for a berth in the 2004 Finals. And "D-Fish" forever earned a place in Laker basketball lore.
