June 12, 2002, the Meadowlands, East Rutherford, New Jersey. Pat Riley is the coach who first coined the phrase "three-peat." Phil Jackson is the coach who perfected it.Before Jackson's Chicago Bulls won three straight titles from 1991-93, only two teams in NBA history had accomplished the feat. Jackson did it again with the Bulls from 1996-98, and his first three years with the Lakers produced, another "three-peat" from 2000-02. While Jackson was tying Red Auerbach with his nine championships as coach, it was Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant of the Lakers who were building their legacies as star players in a sweep of the New Jersey Nets. O'Neal earned his third straight Finals MVP Award after setting a record for points (145) in a four game Finals.
Once the Lakers survived a seven-game scare against Sacramento in the Western Conference Finals, they handled the rest of their job with relative ease. Jackson was given much of the credit. "I realize that if it wasn't for Phil, I wouldn't have any championships," Shaq said. Browse more to our site to view New Jersey Nets Basketball Tickets and more stuff.
