The Indiana Pacers dominated the Eastern Conference during the 2003-04 regular seasons, winning a club record 61 games for the best record in the NBA. The success of the pro franchise in the Midwest's most basketball-crazed state is hardly a recent trend, though. 1980-81 Jack McKinney wins Coach of the Year honors as the Indiana Pacers finish with a winning NBA record for the first time. 1982-83 Rookie Clark Kellogg leads the Indiana Pacers with 20.1 PPG and 10.6 RPG. 1985-86 Chuck Person wins the NBA Rookie of the Year Award. 1987 The Indiana Pacers draft Reggie Miller 11th overall. He will become their all-time scoring king. 1993-94 Larry Brown takes over as coach and begins steering the Indiana Pacers toward the top of the standings. 1998-99 Indiana Pacers reaches the conference finals for the second straight year. 1999-00 Larry Bird coaches the Indiana Pacers to the NBA Finals, where they fall to the Lakers, then gives way to another famous head coach-Isiah Thomas- the following season. 2003-04 Rick Carlisle's Indiana Pacers post a 61-21 record, tops in the NBA, before falling to Detroit in six games in the Eastern Conference finals.
