Houston Rockets grow 'em big in Texas, so the saying goes. Or in the case of the Houston Rockets, they find 'em big elsewhere and use them to win basketball games.
The Houston Rockets are the NBA's "team of the big man," from big forward Elvin Hayes in their San Diego days 30 years ago to centers Moses Malone, Ralph Sampson, Hakeem Olajuwon and Yao Ming. No team in the league has employed as many big-name pivot men as the Houston Rockets, who moved from Southern California to Houston after just four years. Houston Rockets Tickets spent far longer than that chasing an elusive championship. Malone's MVP heroics could not produce one, nor could the "Twin Towers" era in which the team used Sampson and Olajuwon in the same lineup to pose unprecedented match-up problems. Finally, in 1994 and '95, the Houston Rockets tickets turned size into substance with back-to-back championships behind Olajuwon's unstoppable turnaround jumper and dominant play in the paint. Houston Rockets Tickets newest giant, the 7-foot-5 Yao Ming, could turn out to have the same-sized impact as the team tries to improve on its first-round playoff exit in 2004.
1967-68 The expansion San Diego Houston Rockets Tickets lose an NBA record 67 games.
1968-69 A rookie Elvin Hayes wins the NBA scoring title.
1971 Recalling the 50,000 Astrodome fans who once saw Hayes battle UCLA, a group from Houston Rockets purchases and relocates the team. NBA crowds fall short of expectations.
1974-75 Rudy Tomjanovich and Calvin Murphy lead the team to its first playoff berth since moving to Houston Rockets.
1977 On December 9, a fight breaks out. As Tomjanovich runs to the scene, the Lakers' Kermit Washington lands a punch that causes massive jaw, eye and cheek injuries.
1978-79 Moses Malone wins the first of his three MVP Awards.
1980-81 Despite a 40-42 record, the Rockets reach the Finals. Murphy breaks an NBA record by sinking 78 consecutive free throws.
1984 In a draft that also produces Michael Jordan, the Houston Rockets Tickets use the top pick on Akeem (later Hakeem) Olajuwon. He joins fellow 7-footer Ralph Sampson to form the "Twin Towers."
1985-86 Like they did five years earlier, the Houston Rockets fall in six games to Boston in the Finals.
1993-94 A Game 7 win over the Knicks gives Houston its first title. Olajuwon wins MVP and Defensive Player of the Year. Tomjanovich, in his second full season, is the winning coach.
1994-95 The Houston Rockets Tickets acquire Clyde Drexler down the stretch and become the fifth team in NBA history to repeat as champion.
1998-99 Three potential Hall of Famers-Olajuwon, Charles Barkley and Scottie Pippen-join forces.
2002-03 Yao Ming, the 7-foot-5 rookie from China, makes a worldwide impact, leading All-Star vote-getters.
