1978 - Bill Walsh of Stanford was hired as head coach after the team had gone through two head coaches in a 2-14 season.
1979 - In the draft on May 3, the 49ers chose Notre Dame quarterback Joe Montana on the third round.
1982 - The 49ers claimed their first championship by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 in Super Bowl XVI.
1995 - San Francisco became the first franchise to win five Super Bowls with a 49-26 defeat of San Diego on January 29.
