For much of their history, the San Diego Chargers have been providing an air show in the beautiful blue skies of southern California.
The Chargers were one of the American Football League's first successful franchises, thanks to an innovative passing attack developed by Hall of Fame coach Sid Gillman.
Hotel magnate Barron Hilton was awarded an AFL franchise for Los Angeles when the league launched in 1960. Discount San Diego Chargers Tickets. The Chargers spent just a year there before finding a home in San Diego. Sports editor Jack Murphy, a tireless promoter of San Diego as a place for major league sports, helped convince Hilton to move 120 miles south.
The Chargers were an instant success, winning their division in five of the first six years. They bombed the Boston Patriots 51-10 in the 1963 AFL title game. Receivers Lance Alworth and Keith Lincoln keyed the offense, along with running back Paul Lowe and quarterback John Hadl.
The initial success didn't last, though. Gillman was forced to step down in 1969 for health reasons and the Chargers didn't win another division title until 1979.
The coach who brought them back was as fascinated by the passing game as much as Gillman was. Don Coryell brought a wide-open attack that was quickly dubbed 'Air Coryell." Quarterback Dan Fouts ran the offense and piled up statistics that got him and two of his receivers (Charlie Joiner and Kellen Winslow) into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Under Coryell, the Chargers won three AFC West titles and went to a pair of Conference Championship games.
Coach Bobby Ross took San Diego Chargers Schedule to the Super Bowl for the first time, only to lose to the San Francisco 49ers in 1995.
More recent years have seen only modest success. Marty Schottenheimer was hired to get the Chargers back to the San Diego Chargers Tickets postseason.
