The Lions have had difficulty matching the success they enjoyed in the 1950s when they were one of the NFL's most respected franchises.

The franchise started in 1934 when the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans were relocated to Detroit after a radio executive paid $8,000 for the franchise Lions Tickets. From 1957 through 1982, they made the playoffs just twice, qualifying as a wild card entry both times.

The streak ended in 1983 when the team won the NFC Central, a feat they matched in 1991 and 1993. Most of the success came because of running back Barry Sanders, who had record-setting seasons before his abrupt retirement after the 1998 season and Detroit Lions Tickets. The Lions played in the 1991 NFC Championship game, losing to Washington 41-10.

The Lions moved back into the Detroit city limits in 2002. They spent 37 years at Tiger Stadium before moving into a domed stadium in suburban Pontiac, Michigan in 1975. 1963 - Defensive lineman Alex Karras was suspended for one season and fined $2,000 for placing bets on games.
1964 - William Clay Ford purchased the Lions.
1966 - The Lions had a 99-yard passing play, a completion from Karl Sweetan to Pat Studstill against Baltimore on October 16.
1975 - The Lions moved from Tiger Stadium to the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan.
1991 - Barry Sanders became the first Lions player to run for 200 yards in a game, rushing for 220 yards against Minnesota on November 24.

1999 - Sanders retired with 15,269 career rushing yards, just 1,457 yards short of Walter Payton's career mark.
2001 - Matt Millen took over as Lions president and CEO.
