The NFL returned to Baltimore in 1996 after an 12-year absence that was created when the beloved Colts loaded trucks and moved out of town in the middle of the night. Baltimore got pro football back under reverse circumstances-this time, fans got a franchise that had abandoned an established city.

Owner Art Modell, frustrated by his inability to get a new stadium in Cleveland, began shopping the Browns. He closed a deal to move the team to Baltimore. "Ravens", a nod to former Baltimore resident Edgar Allen Poe, was chosen after it was the favorite of more than two thirds of the respondents in a fan poll. The familiar Halloween-tinged orange, brown and white was left in Cleveland and the Baltimore Ravens sported uniforms that were primarily purple and black.

The first Baltimore Ravens coach was Ted Marchibroda, which was also an indirect acknowledgment of Baltimore's NFL past. Marchibroda had enjoyed great popularity as the Colts coach from 1975-79, especially when he transformed a 2-12 team into a 10-4 playoff qualifier in his first season.

Although Modell was anxious to cut ties with Cleveland, much of the front office staff moved to Baltimore, including former Browns tight end Ozzie Newsome, the franchise's director of player personnel.

After Marchibroda left, the Ravens hired highly-regarded assistant Brian Billick as their head coach. The high-profile Billick constructed one of the NFL's most effective defenses and led the team to a Super Bowl victory in its fifth year.

1996 - The Ravens won their first game, beating Oakland 19-14 on September 1.

1998 - Priest Holmes ran for a franchise-record 227 yards on November 22 against Cincinnati.
1999 - Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Brian Billick was named head coach on January 19.
1999 - Qadry Ismael collected a team-record 268 receiving yards on December 12.
