When Arthur J. Rooney founded the Pittsburgh Steelers In 1933, he had no idea 40 years would pass before his team could claim a championship.
The Steelers didn't have lean years, they had lean decades. But when their fortunes finally changed, the Steelers had one of the greatest runs in NFL history, winning four Super Bowls in six years and firmly establishing Pittsburgh as the team of the 1970s.
Rooney was an all-around athlete who boxed, played minor league baseball and semi-pro football. When he started the Steelers, the franchise was known as the Pirates to capitalize on the fame of the city's professional baseball team.
Steelers Tickets stumbled from the start in the 10-team NFL. They had only 22 wins in their first seven seasons and went through five head coaches. The franchise's first winning season came in 1942 but personnel shortages brought on by World War II forced the Steelers to combine with the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Cardinals for two seasons.
Pittsburgh reached the postseason for the first time in 1947 but wouldn't return until 1972. Good players came through Pittsburgh Steelers Tickets but the Steelers could never seem to come up with a formula for success. Low attendance corresponded with the team's futility but Rooney rejected offers to move his team to another city.
The turning point came in 1969 when Art Rooney handed over day-to-day responsibility for the franchise to his son Dan. After being spurned by Penn State's Joe Paterno, Dan Rooney hired Baltimore Colts assistant Chuck Noll as head coach, the first move in assembling the team that would dominate.
The Steelers had phenomenally successful drafts in the early 1970s and their championship rosters were home-grown.
Noll stayed on the job for 23 seasons. His successor, Bill Cowher, has kept the Steelers in the playoffs but they lost to Dallas in their only other Super Bowl appearance.
Pittsburgh Steelers Schedule were expected to contend in 2003 but had a disappointing 6-10 record.
