The wholesale merger with the American Football League in 1970 diluted the original attraction of the Super Bowl but made the NFL stronger. The other upstarts fell by the wayside, arriving far too late to chip away at the NFL's dominance.

In 1971, the AFL and NFL agreed that they would merge into a single league; they also agreed to start the championship game after the 1966 season. As a result of the merger agreement between the two leagues, the first AFL-NFL Championship Game was played on January 15, 1967 and it was between the champions of both the American Football League and the NFL.Although the league was officially called the AFL-NFL Championship, the third game, after the 1968 season, was called the "Super Bowl", and that name is now picked up by others who refer to the first two AFL-NFL Championship Games as well.
