Dom Capers
Pro Career: The Houston Texans introduced Dom Capers as their first head coach on January 21, 2001. The 2002 Houston Texans fin¬ished 4-12, tied for the second-most victories by an expansion team Jacksonville, 1995. The Houston Texans finished 5-11 in 2003. Dom Capers previously spent four seasons from 1995-98 as head coach of the Carolina Panthers, guiding that expan¬sion franchise from its infancy to a playoff berth in its second season. Capers com¬piled a 31-35 record in four seasons as the Panthers' head coach. In 1995, the Panthers' 7-9 record set an NFL mark for most victories by an expansion team. Carolina also posted the first four-game winning streak in expansion history, the first winning home record by an expan¬sion club, and the first win over a defend¬ing Super Bowl champion San Francisco in expansion annals. In 1996, Capers won coach of the year as the Panthers posted a 12-4 record and won the NFC West title. Carolina then defeated defending Super Bowl champion Dallas in the divisional playoffs before losing to Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game. Dom Capers have been a professional assistant coach for the USFLs Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars from 1984-85, New Orleans Saints from 1986-1991, Pittsburgh Steelers from 1992-94, and Jacksonville Jaguars from 1999-2000. Career record: 40-58.
Background: Capers played safety and linebacker at Mount Union College from 1968-1971. Capers coached collegiately at Kent State from 1972-74, Hawaii from 1975-76, San Jose State in 1977, California from 1978-79, Tennessee from 1980-81, and Ohio State from 1982-83.
