The Houston Oilers took the first two American Football League championships. By the time the franchise got back to a title game, It had a new name and a new address.

The potent passing combination of quarterback George Blanda and receiver Billy Cannon helped the Oilers win two titles and just miss a third. In 1961, NFL castoff Blanda threw seven touchdown passes in one game and passed for 464 yards in another.

Lean years followed that run of 31-10-1 over the first three years. It wasn't until the late 1970s that the Oilers got back in the postseason. The Oilers made the playoffs for three consecutive years from 1978-80 and played in two AFC Championship games. By the late 1990s, Coach Jeff Fisher had assembled a winner around the same time that the Oilers' relationship with Houston was disintegrating. 1960 -The Oilers signed No. 1 draft pick Billy Cannon of Louisiana State on January 1.
1961 - With the team off to a 1-3-1 start, Wally Lemm replaced Coach Lou Rymkus, who had led the team to the AFL title a year earlier.
1968 - The Oilers moved from Rice Stadium to the Astrodome, becoming the first pro football team to play indoors and on artificial turf.
1975 - O.A. "Bum" Phillips was hired as head coach on January 25.
1978 - Houston came back from a 23-0 deficit to beat New England 26-23 on November 12.
1984 - Running back Earl Campbell was traded to New Orleans for a first-round draft choice and quarterback Warren Moon was signed as a free agent.
1994 - Jeff Fisher was named head coach on November 14, replacing Jack
Pardee.
1996 - NFL owners approved the franchise's move from Houston to Nashville.
1998 - The team played its last game as the Oilers.
2000 - "The Music City Miracle," a kickoff lateral from Frank Wycheck to Kevin Dyson that covered 75 yards for a touchdown allowed the Titans to advance in the playoffs against Buffalo on January 8.
