Mike Tice
Pro Career: Mike Tice was named the Minnesota Vikings sixth head coach on January 10, 2002. Mike Tice led the team to a 9-7 record in his second season at the helm. He guided the Minnesota Vikings ' to a nine-game winning streak in 2002-03, tied for third-best in team history. Mike Tice led the team to three consecutive wins to end the 2002 season and a 6-0 start in 2003. Tice has been associated with the team since 1992, playing tight end from 1992-93 and 1995, coaching the tight ends in 1996 and the offensive line from 1997-2001. Tice added the title of assistant head coach for the 2001 season and was made the inter¬im head coach for the Minnesota Vikings ' last regular season game of the 2001 season against Baltimore. Tice is the first Minnesota Vikings alumni player to hold the title of the franchise's head coach. In five seasons coaching the offensive line, Tice guided five different players-Matt Birk, Jeff Christy, Randall McDaniel, Todd Steussie, Korey Stringer-to 10 Pro Bowl appearances. In 1998, the offensive line paved the way for numerous NFL and Minnesota Vikings records including a League record for points scored in a season 556 and set Minnesota Vikings records for total yards 6,264 and fewest sacks allowed in a 16-game season 25. Career record: 15-18.
Background: Mike Tice played quarterback at the University of Maryland from 1977-1980. Tice completed 71 of 140 passes for 928 yards with 5 touchdowns as a senior and 896 yards and 5 touchdowns as a junior. Over his 14-year NFL career, Tice caught 107 passes for 894 yards and 11 touch-downs and blocked for running backs that rushed for over 1,000 yards in a season five times. Tice played three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings from 1992-93, 1995, 10 years with the Seattle Seahawks from 1981-88, 1990-91, and one season with the Washington Redskins in 1989 and made 109 starts in 177 games played.
Personal: Mike Tice was born February 2, 1959 in Bayshore, N.Y. Attended Central Islip High School on Long Island. He and wife Diane have two children, Adrienne and Nathan, and live in Edina, Minn.
