Ds David Tanabe and Igor Knyazev were traded to Phoenix on draft day for D Danny Markov. D Glen Wesley returned to Carolina as an unrestricted free agent July 8, signing a one-year, $2.75 million contract. "He's been an important part of our team and a leader on the ice for a long time," GM Jim Rutherford said. "We believe his return further solidifies our defense heading into this season."
Carolina Hurricanes stood pat at the June 21 draft, using the second overall pick on C Eric Staal, who was rated No. 1 among North American prospects by NHL Central Scouting. "For us, it's like winning the lottery. We're pretty excited about this player," Rutherford said. "We'll bring him to camp, we'll give him a good chance and maybe if things go right, he'll stay in Carolina."
