A bull charges through the gates with fury and speed, snorting and bucking. In a blink of an eye, a cowboy is thrown from its back and nearly trampled and stomped to death. An aquatic sea of faces - most topped with ten-gallon hats - gasp and shiver afraid for the rider. For a second, one almost believes that wind whistles and runs through tumbleweed outside this arena. As an alternative, it's snowing in Worcester, Mass., an old industrial city west of Boston that the Professional Bull Riders have chosen for its first 2005 event, along with Justin Boots World Bull-Riding Championship. The DCU Center here, where American innovative Isaiah Thomas once ran his presses, may seem an odd choice of site for the spurred set. Yet it underscores the rising appeal of professional bull riding east of the Mississippi. Certainly, last year the Professional Bull Rider's TV fan base in this partially half of the country surpassed the one back West.

Part of the attraction is obvious- a 150-pound cowboy challenging against a 2,000-pound bull is more exhilarating than the goriest of reality TV shows. The rodeo, the cowboy, the bull: all will never forget the days of the American frontier, when the nation was flush with patriotism and hard work. If countless once dismissed bull riding and the rodeo as country or regional, fans today say they appreciate and value the "regular guy" characteristic cowboys effuse - ones that seem more and more rare in sports stars with their million-dollar contracts. "They aren't hung up on themselves, there is no glorifying themselves," Frank says LeBlanc, a fan of rodeo and a life long resident of Plymouth Mass. who, is attending his first live, professional bull riding show. Across the country, from corner to corner, the curious - are growing. In 1999, some 51 million spectators tuned into Professional Bull Riding coverage; that number swelled to 104 million in 2004. Last year, Justin Boots World Bull-Riding Championship events drew somewhat more household viewers on average than regular NBA season games. That more audience tune in from the East, some say, may simply be a matter of innovation and access. As one man in the bull riding business said it: "Out West, we can watch it just about every day." But its growing in status nationwide also patterns the growing American appetite for all extreme sports.

National Broadcast Company first approved one event in 2001. This season, NBC will carry eight events including Justin Boots World Bull-Riding Championship, Justin Boots World Bull-Riding Championship Tickets also available, and Outdoor Life Network, the same network that carries the Tour de France, will carry 31. In fact, bull riding consistently lines up as one of Outdoor Life Network's highest-rated programming. It was the danger part that first drew Mr. LeBlanc to watch rodeos as a college student at Colorado State University, where some of this native New Englander's dormmates were part of the university's rodeo team. "At first I was in awe of how nuts people were to do it," says LeBlanc. "We say that rodeo is the original extreme sport," says Ann Bleiker, a spokeswoman for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in Colorado. "You wanna see a guy ride well, but you are also there to see what might happen. It's an adrenaline rush."
