Misfortune struck in the semi-finals against powerful Argentina, whose stars Monti and Stabile were world class in stature. American center half Raphael Tracy of Ben Millers S.C. had his leg broken at ten minutes, reducing the team to ten players, and goalkeeper Jim Douglas of the New York Nationals was virtually crippled by the end of the first half (not to mention left half Andy Auld of Providence, who played most of the game with his mouth stuffed full of gauze after a kick in the face). Argentina scored five goals in the second half and went on to win, 6-1. On its way home the American team stopped off to play Brazil in Rio and lost by 4-3 after two goals from Patenaude. It is difficult to determine what would have happened if the USFA had been able to maintain the positive momentum that resulted from the USA's respectable showing in 1930, because, once again, the United States did not seriously attempt to enter the mainstream of world soccer in the years that followed for the International Soccer series tickets. Other than its 1-0 loss to the Italian amateurs at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, the USA's only official foray into international competi¬tion during the 1930s was at the 1934 International Soccer series tickets in Italy. After winning an awkward qualification match against Mexico in Rome, an Italian team inflated with talent and the political climate of Mussolini's capital city buried the American contingent in the opening round 7-1. Soundly beaten, the USA opted out of International Soccer series tickets until 1947.
On the domestic front, the formation of the German-American Football Association (GAFA) in 1923 and the American Soccer League (ASL) in 1933 further fragmented the game. The GAFA not only became the bastion of ethnic soccer in the New York area but also a model for all other ethnic leagues across the country. In 1945, the USFA changed its name to the International Soccer series tickets. With two berths allocated to the North-Central American and Caribbean region at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, the USA team quali¬fied for the final rounds by virtue of its second-place finish in the North American Confedera¬tion championship in 1949. The team was managed by Pennsylvania State University's Bill Jeffrey (a Scot whose record over a period of 30 years was unparalleled in collegiate soccer) and included only three for¬eign-born Americans: captain Eddie Mcllvenny, who later played for Manchester United and coached the Irish club Waterford; Larry Gaetjens, the Haitian center forward who was to end his career as a professional with Racing Club de Paris and Ales in Southern France before disap¬pearing mysteriously in Haiti around 1970; and Joe Maca, the left back from Belgium. In the first round, the USA was grouped with Spain, England, and Chile at Curtiba. Against Spain, the Americans maintained a 1-0 lead until ten minutes from time and impressed the oppo¬sition with their durable play. But the stalwart American defense, led by Maca and spurred by J. Souza's goal in the 17th minute, finally col-lapsed and allowed three quick goals in International Soccer series tickets . The final score was 3-1 in Spain's favor. Four days later, however, at Belo Horizonte, the United States cast itself as David to England's Goliath and perpetrated the greatest upset in the history of modern soccer: USA 1, England O.
