SCOTTSDALE, AZ-- The Qatar Tennis Federation has purchased and will shift the Scottsdale women's Tier II tennis tournament to Doha, Qatar, beginning with the 2005 event. IMG, which owned the competition, sold the event because of scheduling conflicts with its 10-day combined men and women's events in Indian Wells that would have overlapped with the ATP event in Scottsdale in 2004. For 2004 and beyond IMG tournament organizers planned to run the Scottsdale Men's and Women's events throughout the same week (as opposed to two divided weeks as in years past.) The Southern California event, combined with the forced shortening of the Scottsdale tournaments, made it clear the competition had to be moved.
"While we are upset that the women will not be playing in Scottsdale, we think the shift to Qatar provides new options for women's tennis," said Peter Tatum, IMG Vice President Western Region Events. "Scottsdale is a wonderful tennis community, and we look forward to continuing to expand our 13-year-old men's ATP event."
