The King And I is based on a 1944 book by Margaret Landon, Anna and the King of Siam which, in turn, was taken from the real life reminiscences of Anna Leonowens as recalled in her own books The English Governess at the Siamese Court and The Romance of the Harem.
The era is the early 1860's, the royal capital city of Bangkok in the kingdom of Siam was the place. Anna Leonowens, a beautiful English widow, arrives in Bangkok with her son Louis. Escorted to land by the King's Prime Minister, The Kralahome, Anna is not sure that she has made the right decision by coming to Siam, but decides, for now at least, to hold up her end of a bargain with the King.
